New speed cameras

Started by: mortarmillbill (929)

Work seems to be going on to replace all the old speed cameras.

Trials have been taking place elsewhere with cameras that not only detect speeding motorists but are also clear enough to see anyone using a mobile phone or not wearing a seat belt.

I don't know if the new cameras can do this but they seem to look like the cameras seen on motorways.

The more camera's the better to get the idiot drivers, many of whom are driving under the influrence of drink and drugs off the roads and streets.

Wish they would put one on our street to catch those who think that they are a Lewis Hamilton!

As we type, which means now, today, which is the day before tomorrow, they are replacing the speed camera on Wallgate, adjacent to the Pier complex, and it looks hideous

IN reply to you OWD CODGER/
I do agree with you but, my greatest complaint with what you say about drug/drink/speed driver's if you watch the tv progs about (Motorway Cops) Traffic Cops) The police go to extraordinary lengths in catching these scum idiots ,then at the end of teh prog it tells you what sentences they get . Guess what 8/10 get away with suspended sentence and a bit of a fine . IN most cases the scum they stop generally have ,NO INSURANCE .NO DRIVING LICENCE/ and they give them a driving ban !!! THEY don't have one in first palce , MY ANSWER IS TO BANG THEN ALL AWAY !! I do feel sorry for the cops they work their balls off ,then the scum are let off !! That's soft Britain today alas !! G.B.

GB precisely what you say. I have stopped watching these programmes as I get so aggravated at the sentences or lack of them.
How about on TV news today A guy filming himself doing 100mph + and ploughed into a woman on the hard shoulder. killing her and badly injuring two small boys. 12 years Probably out in 6

I asked about these new speed cameras over 3 years ago on WW and was told they are called "vulture" cameras, Which can see into your car to see if you are using a mobile phone or do not have your seat belt on etc.

Peter, the new cameras at the bottom of Stubshaw Brow are bi-directional. Meaning that they can record your speed in either direction, going past them or coming towards them.
In other words, the camera can now record your speed goiing downhill, towards it, at Conway Road at the top of the hill. The previous camera could only get you going past it, up the hill.

As for 'seeing you without a seat belt on or using your phone, that's all my arse! Unless, of course, you're speeding as well. In that case, you trip it and it takes your picture so 'them men' will have photo evidence of you speeding, not wearing a seat belt, whilst on your phone, eating a pie and drinking a can of Stella!

Tonks the new cameras on top of the post are the speed cameras and number plate recognition but further down the posts are what look like small black boxes and these are the new cameras which can observe the inside of the car all of the cameras are infa-red so can be used in the dark, The original black boxes where mounted on separate posts either side of the speed cameras. .I asked about these on 8th July 2020 (Black Boxes) fitted on the A565 &A675 and some more have been installed around Croston since then.

Yer all wrong, inclooding that Tonker

Having observed the new camera at the pier complex this morning, I deduced,,, sherlock Homes style

That they do NOT calculate your speed approaching the camera, the two cameras are for checking traffic speed for traffic travelling in both directions, it is as simple as that, so I would expect on two way traffic roads, such as Wigan Road and Bolton Road, in the coming days and weeks, new calibration markings to be added to the road on the opposite side to where the markings are now.

So how did I deduce that ?

At the pier complex, both camera's and the flashing light things are pointing in the same direction, at the rear of passing traffic, just like the old speed camera did, because it is a one way dual carriageway road, so now each lane has a speed camera.

So now yoo know

So the flashy things are infrared, I wonder if they do flash, or are on all the time, and they don't need the calibration markings, so the present markings will be burned off

Tonkers link mentions that the next phase will be to introduce average speed cameras.

Just imagine if you go through the speed camera near Little Lane roundabout and go over the speed limit until you are clocked again at Wigan Pier you will be getting a fine and points on your licence.

Thanks for posting the link Tonker as it is an interesting read.

If an 'average speed system' is linked to a gps signal, it could tell how long it's taken, for a registration plate, to get from A to B. Google maps plot you the quickest route, it also takes into account traffic status at the time. Tom-Tom, Garmen etc. also link to gps and tell you which way to go, also how long it's going to take you and what time you'll arrive.
A couple of weeks ago, me and my mate drove over to Spain in another car I bought for use over there.
1260 miles in 2 days. I have a Tom-Tom sat-nav, which warned me of upcoming speed cameras, well before I got to them. Great! without it I'd've been ££££€€€€€€ out of pocket!
But, when the 'average speed calculating, number plate recognising, photograph taking and taking your money out of your bank account before you get home' machines take over, there'll be no escape!

In my past...I personally didn't issue a fixed penalty unless the offender was exceeding the limit by 10mph +..but when I learned that the Central Ticket Office at Manchester...responsible for obtaining...processing funds for the offences were sending funds to all sorts of charities...LGBT ..Asylum funds etc etc ...my conviction rate went down drastically. And it is still the same to this day...nothing to do with accident prevention...just another tax ..GMP "Andy Burnham" and the rest are P*****g in your ears while you sleep.

That speed camera at Goose Green is now in a stupid place for a speed camera, because when it was first installed, it was at the end of long straight dual carriageway, so the traffic needed slowing down going into the continuation of Warrington Road, because from the dual carriageway, the traffic hit a standard two way road, with housing, parked cars, and with the slight right hand bend, it was also a 'blind' stretch of road you were heading into, but now with the various new road orientations at that location, including the roundabout, I think that location is a lot less prone to speeding.

In the 20 minutes it took for me to go to Asda, there and back this morning, the traffic light people came along to the camera in Goose Green, and turned the crossing off, installed temporary traffic lights along with the signage and cones, switch them on and bugger off, and there is a hole about 10ft in front of the present camera, where I presume they are putting the new cameras

The one at Landgate , all the camera's (4) are pointing one way, Towards Wigan and I don't know if its coincidence but,It is in the direction of the old markers on the road. From that observation I wonder if Tommy Tee's Sherlock Holmes's theory still stacks up ?

"You may have noticed that some of the borough’s speed cameras – or “safety cameras" as the authorities like to call them – have received an upgrade.
Gone are the traditional grey pillar topped with a yellow box ready to flash an unsuspecting driver with their foot down.
And gradually appearing in their place – on Spring Road, Orrell, Bolton Road, Ashton, Wigan Road, Land Gate, and Wallgate, Wigan, to name but four – are much taller, more slender poles topped with two small cameras.
However, contrary to rumours put about on social media they can’t measure other offences such as using a phone while driving.

So what’s the difference?

Well the main thing is that they can catch speeders coming in both directions and without needing secondary check markings on the road.
There is no visible flash when the camera detects a speeding vehicle either.

The project’s second phase will see the introduction of 25 average speed routes to replace existing speed cameras and enforce speeding over a larger area, alongside the removal of 53 existing speed camera locations. Tenders for the second phase are currently being assessed

Whilst i do agree something need sto be done about speeding motorists ,my main argaument against the increased number of them and the actual speed's are outdated . If ne takes a serious looks at the quality of the engines that are produced for today's market mean that at such low speed as the current 20mph is FAR TOO low ,, AS today's engines become laboured thus increase more pollution into the atmosphere .I honestly believe that the local limit's should be around 30MPH .On Estates i agree to the 20MPH but on "B" Roads it should be 30 MPH and as for the motorway network ,70 MPH IS LUDICROUS WITH the advancement of today's engines so for Motorways i strongly advocate 80MPH , But at the present all what is happening is that the motorist is being BLED DRY ,WITH CAMERA'S with INANE COST OF FUEL also THE "" SPEED HUMPS " IS ANOTHER MONEY SPINNER FOR THE GARAGES more expense for the motorist and lets not forget the vast majority NEED their cars to get to their employment as we all know the PUBLIC TRANSPORT SYSTEM IN UK IS UTTERLY CRAP AND TOO EXPENSIVE !! I have no doubt what-so -ever this may cause a storm . G.B.
